the arrivals - sisters series vol 2 (2009 razorcake)

To answer Friday's question, no. The Arrivals are one of the finest current acts out of the Windy City.

I was lucky enough to see them  Saturday night with Dillinger Four (more on that later), and picked this gem up. This is part of an extended split 7" with the Grabass Charlestons. What is an extended 7" you ask? Well, as far as I understand, each band has it's own 7" with three originals plus a cover of the other band. Then, if you get both 7"'s and put them together, the covers make one big cover. Neat.

This record takes a bit of a different direction than some of their earlier stuff. I was struggling to find a way to describe it, but SC nailed it: It's more Elvis Costello-ish.

Anyhoo, The Arrivals are rad and should be better known. Download this. And then go buy it. And then subscribe to Razorcake.

dillinger four

Dillinger Four, The Arrivals, Tiltwheel, and The Riverboat Gamblers played the Casbah Friday night. I only got to see one Tiltwheel song, I don't really dig the Riverboat Gamblers, but The Arrivals and Dillinger Four were outstanding, as expected.

The Arrivals, plus two dudes huge noggins:

Paddy - my hero and haircut mentor:

Dillinger Four:

Seeing Dillinger Four was pretty special for me. In addition to being my favorite current band, the Situationist Comedy album helped get me through one of the rougher stretched of my life. I was broke, just really scratching by, I was in a city I hated, I knew no one, and my job was completely and totally demoralizing.

Here's some songs and lyrics that helped a whole bunch.

Folk Song:

It's like picking up the pieces is a daily chore
Thinking of your time card forms a habit
Watching rich folks on T.V.'s like picking a sore
Fuck it all, they can have it

And now I'm loaded like a gun again
Like a plague of locusts heaven sent
Just a ball of dissension with a death perception
I won't sweat the definition of content

They said "better safe than sorry" and "look out for #1"
I heard "only play the cards your shown"
Fuck what they say
It doesn't matter anyway
Only in your grave are you alone

Like grown men staring with little boy's eyes
And actresses speaking with conviction
These people should demand a pulitzer prize
For various works of fiction

"Judge a book by it's cover"
And "keep one eye on your back"
I heard "only play the cards your shown"
I say fuck what they say
It doesn't matter anyway
Only in your grave are you alone

So many people with so much to show
Rotting away in their own little holes
One can only wonder why
I'll celebrate my home
But know that I'm not alone
Only fools are "along for the ride"
In thinking of the size
Of the world that's right outside
Please don't waste it trying to hide

A Floater Left In The Executive Washroom With Pleasure:

Single file lines born by design
With a brass ring so deceiving
Chipped away to a status cult
Where indifference breeds control
And then with time comes "toe the line"
Cherish this pride made numb from feeling
The we have denial
"It's all in my head"

Will we do anything for bread?

If anything we've ever said
Means nothing now than it never did
Believe me
This isn't what we want
This isn't what we need
This is what we can afford

Where once there was a pat on the back
Is now just a crack of the whip
Where once there was a celebrated coming of age
Is just a uniform that doesn't fit
Witness this most common breed
Whittled down to property
And keep on singin'
"It's all in my head"

Will we do anything for bread?

If anything we've ever said
Means nothing now than it never did
Believe me
This isn't what we want
This isn't what we need
This is what we can afford

Celebrate this sorry state
With anecdotes of what you hate
And try to take comfort in the fact
That you're not alone

This isn't you
It's just what you do
Don't mistake the irony of calling it a "living"
If you feel like no one
If you feel like nothing
You've only been taking what they're giving

Laborissuesinthetoydepartment:

"Know your place"
It's like a voice
That won't go away
Live vices we hold to tradition
Like children not allowed to across the street
Starving for some recognition
Where want and honesty meet
Nothing known can match the bitter pain
Of happiness just beyond the reach of your chain
And the overwhelming feeling it will be the same forever

Now here I'm looking down a hole again
Treating damage and despair like they're long lost friends
With no remedy at all
I'm waiting for the fall
Staring out the window
Like what's outside's unattainable

Cover me with roses for the funeral pyre
Shoot this dashing carcass out to fucking sea
I can't wait, in this state
This voice, these hands
Don't feel like they're really
Me

I'm the blinded who can feel that he's surrounded by walls
And relief is very seldom cheap
Now I think I'm gonna snap
Like prey in a trap
Watch as desperation takes a seat
Forgive me my trespasses
Like I know I'll trespass tonight
Don't want to hear any fucking voices at all
Even if they're saying I'm alright

Memories beating soundly on the body
Cursing what's left of the sorry shell
I'd give anything to make this heart stop pounding
Staring out the window
Like what's outside's unattainable

Cover me with roses for the funeral pyre
Shoot this dashing carcass out to fucking sea
I can't wait, in this state
This voice, these hands
Don't feel like they're really...

Now life's like a b-movie
That no one wants to see
Here comes the zombie
Portraying me
What was once so crystal clear
Is now cranked past the norm
And I can't take it anymore

chargers / dolphins

  • I really don't have a lot of complaints with Norv's handling of the game. Most of the stuff that didn't work was due to the players, not coaching decisions.
  • That said, I could definitely use less of Darren Sproles going up the middle and off-tackle. That's not what he does, and it has not worked. Michael Bennett is more than adequate for that purpose.
  • Philip Rivers did not have his finest game, which is okay sometimes. But the red zone offense is a major concern. I'm not seeing enough throws to Antonio Gates in the end zone.
  • What happened to Chris Chambers?
  • I was ready to give up on the run defense, but they stepped up when it counted. Yes, they got lucky on the Ronnie Brown fumble, but luck is a part of the game.
  • The injuries are stacking up (now Merriman is hurt), and it's more than worrying. But the Chargers are 2-1, with that close loss being to what is looking like a Super Bowl caliber Baltimore team. The young guys are getting thrown into the fire, and hopefully they'll improve week after week. The Vaughn Martin and Larry English picks are beginning to look brilliant.
  • Eric Weddle is our secret Troy Polamalu. Don't get me wrong, he's not close to being as good as Polamalu (yet), but he plays a similar game. He's all over the field, and seems to be involved in every play. Incredibly underrated guy.
  • I was a little worried when Pennington got hurt. My memory could be wrong, but I think it was against the Chargers that Drew Bledsoe got hurt and was replaced by Michigan's Tom Brady, who proceeded to act like he's been starting for five years and shredded the Chargers. Now Pennington gets hurt and is replaced by Michigan's Chad Henne, who proceeds to stink up the joint. Take that, superstition.

You start something, you finish it. That's what I've always been taught. Unfortuntely I have not applied that lesson in my own life. But now, I have a new role model, and a new standard of dedication to aspire to.

A German trucker suspected of driving under the influence of drugs crashed his vehicle near BorÃ¥s in western Sweden on Tuesday. He subsequently admitted to masturbating at the time of the accident. The trucker, apparently unable to reach a satisfactory climax, then proceeded to continue to pleasure himself while in the midst of a police interrogation, according to the local BorÃ¥s Tidning newspaper. He was masturbating while the police interrogated him,” police prosecutor Ã…sa Askenbäck told the newspaper. “He has admitted that he was not paying full attention at the time of the accident. He was playing with himself instead of focusing on the road.” The truck driver was en route from Gothenburg to BorÃ¥s at around 4am on Tuesday morning. The man remained in the vehicle with his hands apparently still clasped around his own gear stick and was subsequently arrested for reckless driving and driving while under the influence of drugs. The suspicions against the man have now been extended to sexual molestation.

alex spanos sucks

I swear if I wasn't a Chargers fan, I would loathe them.

Chuck Piro has been going to Chargers games for 30 years and never once missed a kickoff — until Sunday, when an unpublicized change in the team's admission policy delayed thousands of fans' entrance to the home opener.

This year two gates at Qualcomm Stadium are being set aside exclusively for luxury-seat ticket holders, herding fans with tickets that cost up to $98 into nearby gates with no barricades or security to stop people from taking cuts. Fans call the new policy discriminatory because it pits about 8,000 luxury-seat holders against 60,000-or-so others who must walk farther and wait longer to get into the stadium at a time when it's a luxury just to buy a football ticket.

That's gonna win the public over for a new stadium.

chargers contrarianism

God, some of the more "serious" Chargers outlets are falling all over themselves to defend Norv Turner's playcalling. Bolt's From The Blue says he made the right calls (adding that the Ravens "should have been caught off-guard. Really? With no wideouts and everyone crowded in the box?). Tim Sullivan says that he's pretty sure Norv and his staff thought very, very hard about the calls (which is probably part of the problem).

I'm gonna chalk all this up to a mix of homer-ism and Slate-like contrarianism. I will also add that I don't really care. It's a game. I find following the football to be a pleasant diversion. I was over yesterday's loss about ten seconds after the last play. It's really fun to have these discussions and arguments over strategy, playcalling, and everything else. As mad as I might seem sometimes, I'm really not.  It's a game.

Apparently, not everyone has my sunny outlook.
I wish the fans that talk bad about Norv's play calling could be lined up and shot. You're the scum of the earth! I hate hate hate, your monday morning quarterbacking... I loathe your kind. go slit your own throats!
Haha. I'm like, kinda flattered someone would think of me with so much passion.

9.21.2009

fire norv

Even if the Chargers were healthy, I was not confident of a win against the Ravens, because 1) The Ravens are a very good football team, and 2) the Chargers are a very overrated football team, who are 3) coached by Norv Turner.

So, being as depleted as they were due to injuries, I was encouraged to see them in a position to win this game. But I can't say that I'm happy. In fact, I'm a little pissed. The reason is pretty obvious: Norv Turner.

Seeing San Diego come out of the gate throwing the ball was a hopeful sign. Looking at the personell on the team, it's pretty obvious it's what we should have been doing all along. But we haven't. Because of Norv Turner.

But let's let the past be the past. All this throwing in the first half, perhaps it's a new era of Charger football. Air Coreyell redux. Hope lives!

But then: End of first half. Chargers have the ball inside the Raven's ten yard line. Ten seconds left. 3rd Down. It's pretty obvious that you take a shot throwing into the end zone, right? It's not going to take ten seconds, and if it's incomplete, you kick the field goal. Even I know that.

But Norv outsmarted everyone buy kicking the field goal on third down. That's Fire Norv Reason Number 5468.

Okay, so we move to the second half. The Chargers are still getting outplayed. The loss of Jamal Williams is glaring. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that he's the second most important person on the team behind Philip Rivers, who, by the way, almost lost the game single-handedly by getting a throw-away pass intercepted. But despite all this, the Chargers are somehow still in the game.

San Diego is down five with less than a minute to go in the game. Philip Rivers is conducting one of his patented Philip Rivers game winning drives. San Diego faces a 4th and 2. The passing game has been brilliant for most of the day. The running game has struggled. The offensive line is depleted. LaDanian Tomlinson is out. Devin Hester has been ineffective as a fullback.

You make the call.

Quick slant to Antonio Gates or Vincent Jackson? Go for the TD with a corner fade route?

Oh, I forgot to mention: Norv Turner is your coach.

That's right, have Sproles run the ball up the middle, only to run into the waiting arms of Ray Lewis for a loss.

Game over.

Fire Norv.

So, Louis CK went on Conan, did some comedy and told some stories. Louis CK could read a biology textbook and I'd probably die laughing. Anyhoo, while he's telling his story, all I could think is, "could I possibly survive hanging around Louis CK, Ricky Gervais, and John Hodgeman AT THE SAME TIME?" There's just no way.

waterworld

The place I grew up, Lemoore, CA, is a odd mix of farmers, farmworkers, and military folk (my presence in Lemoore was military related). As you can imagine, it's a pretty conservative area. But more than anything, what gets you elected is your stand on farming issues. This is why many Democrats (Cal Dooley, Jim Costa, etc) have served long periods of time in Valley districts that skew overwhelmingly Republican. I understand the farmer's perspective. I don't always agree with it (farmworker relations, environmental concerns), but I respect it. To a point.

Central Valley farmers, I love you, but we need to cut the shit. Agribusiness is one of the most subsidized industries in the country. So could you please stop this no-more-taxes, anti-government bullcrap? I understand that you are not getting your full water allotments. I sympathize with that. But let's stop pretending that you are not taking that water from somewhere else. The Delta is a hundred miles away, and there's no river that flows to Kings County. You do not own the Delta! The Central Valley Project was not paid for by farmers. Do you think that Pine Flat Dam built itself? Your water gets to you exactly because of the government, not despite it. And you pay next to nothing for it!

So while I do sympathize, I can't get past the rank hypocrisy of turning on the government when it has been you biggest benefactor for 100 years.

But more than that, bringing in and virtually fellating the odious Sean Hannity highlight your woes, well, you may have just lost me.

It's one thing to say that human concerns in this case outweigh environmental concerns. There's a debate to be had there. But dismissing environmental concerns as "eco-tyranny"? Booing fish? If you're coming from a perspective of either A) "Farming does not cause environmental damage", or B) "Yeah, farming causes environmental damage, but so what?", then is there really a chance in hell of having an honest debate? If you are allowed to simply dismiss those whose view is different than yours, why shouldn't they dismiss you? I won't even get into the "God Squad" angle.

Basically, what I'm saying is that you could sway a lot of people's opinions if you would stop acting like children.

Okay, that's off my chest.

I do hope you get your water. I really do.

in defense of crazy uncles

People who happen to be correct, supported by these apparently insignificant things called "facts," can now be dismissed as "crazy" if they don't adhere to the approved Beltway script. Man, it sucks to be right.

Nor are Democrats strangers to having their crazy uncles take center stage. During the run-up to the Iraq war, for example, Reps. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.), Mike Thompson (D-Calif.) and David Bonior (D-Mich.) famously flew to Baghdad, where McDermott asserted that he believed the president would “mislead the American public” to justify the war. The trip made it a cakewalk for critics to describe the Democratic Party as chockablock with traitorous radicals.

everready - county transit system (1995 mutant pop)

If I told you
how much I hated you
would you still want me?

One of the sucky things about living in San Diego is that when most people think of San DIego punk bands, they think of fucking Blink-182 and Unwritten Law when they should be thinking about the Zeros. About Battalion Of Saints. About Unbroken. About The Neighbors. And yes, about Everready.

Everready were San Diego's answer to Green Day, only drunker and more honest (and better, I would argue - certainly better than the post 1995 Green Day). I understand why they didn't make it big (not they they cared about that sort of thing), but the lack of respect and rememberance of them does grate. They were a great fucking band. Recognize.

This record was played a lot, so it's a bit scratchy at times. But that's the sign of a special record. This version of "Dum-E" is in my top 5 Everready songs.

1) I see Don Dokken, I see Mick Brown, I do not see Jeff Pilson, and most importantly, I do not see George Lynch. Therefore, I don't see the band Dokken.

2) As I've recently discovered, the music that I thought was so bad-ass and dangerous as a teenager, has in retrospect turned out to mainly consist of rather wimpy love songs. Dokken is not dangerous. Dokken never was dangerous. Dokken are not a threat to chickens. Dokken are not a threat to anything. What are they gonna do, serenade it with "In My Dreams"? Norton should have hired King Diamond.

the rob jobs - lucas/outrigger junkie ep (1995 beer city)

This is just so much better than it has any business being. The artwork looks generic, the band's name is pretty generic, and yet this is pretty great punk with heavy Fugazi and light Quicksand influences.

Never judge a book by it's cover. Or a record by it's sleeve.

This is the second EP I have posted by The Rob Jobs. The other one, also recommended, can be found here.

la mesa sucks

I January, I moved out of the city of San Diego into neighboring La Mesa. In the 36 years before living in La Mesa, I received maybe five traffic tickets. In the eight months I've lived in La Mesa, I've recieved three. So maybe I'm biased. But this is riduculous:
Trustees of the La Mesa-Spring Valley School District met in a special session on Labor Day and voted to prohibit their schools from showing President Barack Obama's speech Tuesday to district students.

Special session? On Labor Day (I'm curious if they are going to get paid for this session)? To prohibit (not "leave to teacher's discretion") the President from telling students to be responsible and work hard?

Unbelievable what's going on in this country.

Rick Winet, Bob Duff, and Penny Halgren - you are cowards and an embarrassment to your "profession", not that I think too highly of trustees to begin with.

traitors - no friends (1997 johanns face)

From, where else? Chicago. A Chicago supergroup of sorts. This incarnation of the band features Marc Ruvalo (No Empathy, Johanns Face Records), Matt Skiba (Alkaline Trio), Billy Smith (Haymarket Riot), and Francisco Ramirez (Gasoline Fight). Recorded by Steve Albini, who supposedly halted work with Page and Plant as well as Bush to do this.

the mushuganas - dropout girl (1995 harmless records)

I'm starting to bore myself with all these brilliant, overlooked Chicago punk bands. Here we have catch punk with vocals a bit on the gruffier side. A must have if you're into Chicago punk rock.

viva unregulated capitalism!

When you get to the bottom of the barrel, keep scraping. Eventually, you'll find bankers.
After the mortgage business imploded last year, Wall Street investment banks began searching for another big idea to make money. They think they may have found one.

The bankers plan to buy “life settlements,” life insurance policies that ill and elderly people sell for cash — $400,000 for a $1 million policy, say, depending on the life expectancy of the insured person. Then they plan to “securitize” these policies, in Wall Street jargon, by packaging hundreds or thousands together into bonds. They will then resell those bonds to investors, like big pension funds, who will receive the payouts when people with the insurance die.

The earlier the policyholder dies, the bigger the return — though if people live longer than expected, investors could get poor returns or even lose money.

Either way, Wall Street would profit by pocketing sizable fees for creating the bonds, reselling them and subsequently trading them.
I feel sick.

By BANNING this video from children, parents and schools have in effect established the President’s short speech about the importance of goal-making as the coolest shit ever, ever, ever, at least since the South Park movie. Kids will be watching this thing at sleepovers after the parents go to bed for the next decade.

brown lobster tank - static (1995 dr. strange)

Take one part All/later Descendents, add one part Big Drill Car, sprinkle in a little Gameface, and you get Brown Lobster Tank (who later shortened their name to The Tank). If this was released in 1991, it would have been on C/Z fer sure. In the mid 90's, I got completely sick of this kind of stuff, there was just too much of it. But after a decade plus, it's sounding quite good again.

FWIW, I'm still not sold on my new turntable. Feedback on if these rips are too noisy would be appreciated.

al franken is a disgrace to the senate

Who does he think he is, with his talking rationally and with respect to people who disagree with him and using facts to explain a complex problem? I knew letting a comedian into the Senate was a bad idea.

C'mon, Al. DEATH PANELS! DON'T KILL GRANDMA! NO SOCIALISM! Fear and hyperbole. That's how we debate in this country.

fuckboyz - vs. the hawaiian mafia (1993 last resort)

This one is also on my list of "greatest records of all time". Fuckboyz were the Florida version of Hickey. When Aesop and Matty Luv headed out to San Francisco, they initially kept Fuckboyz going before disbanding and reconstituting as the almighty Hickey. This is from the San Francisco Fuckboyz days, and while nothing on here is as good as "Rock N Roll Problem," "Hallucinating", or "Nurse," (but what is, really?) - "Chapels Of Reno" comes damn close though - this is probably the most consistent Fuckboyz record. Just fucking awesome.
