1994

1994 Chargers highlights. I can say that 1994 was awesome. 3/4 of January 1995 was spectacular. That last week of January, not so much.

i live in hell

Dear Landlord - I Live In Hell - Live at The Fighting Cocks, Kingston, UK - 14/05/10 from Everything Sucks TV on Vimeo.

Dear Landlord is one of the best bands you don't know about. Or maybe you do. Fuck, I don't know.

seattle can suck it

Everybody knows that the greatest rivalry in baseball is Padres-Mariners. So a bet between fans of each team meant that a Mariners fan had to make this video, celebrating the Padres.

blue water seafood

Went to Blue Water while my awesome mechanic was working on my car. The deal here is the freshness of the food. I've heard that they catch some of the fish themselves, but that sounds a little wive's tale-ish.

Anyhoo, started some seriously good clam chowder. This was just a starter cup. can't remember if they do breadbowls here or not, but it would be worth investigating.

Next was some ceviche. Huge pieces of shrimp. I'm a ceviche novice, and most I've had has been pretty chopped up, almost into a salsa. Not this. This was miles beyond any ceviche I've had. Plus, they use El Indio chips. I believe El Indio is in the top 3 most overrated restaurants in San Diego, but the one thing they do right, better than anyone else in town, is tortillas.

Finally, a swordfish taco. These also use El Indio tortillas.

It may look the taco is heavy on the cabbage and light on the sword fish, but that is not true. There is a lot of swordfish hidden under there:

My only complaint is the lack of a decent homemade hot sauce to go along with the taco. But it's a fish place, not a taco shop, so that's stretching it, complaint wise.

Awesome lunch. Way too much food, but it was my splurge day, so what the hell.

I spied some of the sandwiches people were having, and they looked amazing. It's hard for me to pass up a chance at a good fish taco, but their sandwiches look like a must-try item. I also heard someone mention that their onion rings were pretty great as well.

I went to get coffee at Gelato Vero afterward. Overheard a couple of tourists looking through a guidebook trying to decide between El Indio and Blue Water. I had to butt in and pretty much demand that they go to Blue Water.

Airplane! is among my favorite comedies, yet I had no idea it was based on another movie, Zero Hour. 1) This just makes it funnier to me. 2) I gotta watch Airplane! again.

Great record. Boris The Sprinkler do a KISS cover and a Misfits cover. The Droids do three songs (including an Exploited cover sung in Polish) which further my point that they were one of the more overlooked 90's bands.

the counter

I've heard a lot about this chain burger place in Carlsbad called The Counter. Curiosity got the best of me so I drove up to check it out.

The concept is similar to Which Wich, where you get to customize your burger based on a picklist. You pick the size of burger, a cheese, up to four toppings, a sauce, and a bun.

I'm a little bit of an Alton Brown burger purist (cheese and mayo only), so this was a little weird. It's kind of nerve racking, because you are constantly wondering if topping x will go with topping y (and z). Or if the topping will make the actual burger all together. I was paralyzed for a moment, but decided fuggit, and just ordered what I felt like at the moment, compatibility be damned.

I went with 1/3 lb patty, blue cheese, spicy sour cream, scallions, olives, green chiles, jalapenos, and a regular bun. They were more than happy to cook it medium-rare. Actual medium-rare, not medium-but-called-medium-rare most places do.

I know it sounds like it would be nasty, and it probably looks nasty, but somehow this hot mess of a burger totally worked. All the ingredients, the meat, the bun Really, really good. I just wish there was one closer.

What didn't work were the fries (not bad, just nothing special), the mix on the soda (too much carbonated water), and the music. As much as I enjoyed getting the burger down, hearing Snow's "Informer" and Maroon 5 almost made my lunch come up.

Sacramento's Yah Mos were fucking brilliant. But very few noticed. So, part of the band moves to New York, calls themselves !!!, and suddenly they are hipster darlings. Shit like that makes me sick, but it happens all the time (I'm looking at you, Hold Steady). Not blaming the bands, blaming the NYC-LA centric system.

time for a new acronym

The TEA Party....that stands for Taxed Enough Already, right? Right. So, I'd be curious as to how they circle this square:

Amid complaints about high taxes and calls for a smaller government, Americans paid their lowest level of taxes last year since Harry Truman's presidency, a USA TODAY analysis of federal data found.

Federal, state and local taxes — including income, property, sales and other taxes — consumed 9.2% of all personal income in 2009, the lowest rate since 1950, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reports. That rate is far below the historic average of 12% for the last half-century. The overall tax burden hit bottom in December at 8.8.% of income before rising slightly in the first three months of 2010.

sean hannity's computer is a teleprompter

An Earthball tells the story:
A minute later a man called to criticize the entire Miranda process as a sop to liberals, and Sean Hannity tapped on the brakes of the conversation. He wanted to be clear that he supported the rule of law, even as he questioned its application in this case. Sean Hannity then began to give his account of the Miranda decision. "It was enshrined in U.S. law," he said, and I frowned. "Enshrined" was not a word I had ever heard him use, and I had listened to him for thousands of hours. It was puzzling. Then I noticed the solution to this puzzle, which was right before me: the Miranda decision Wikipedia page began by noting that the event was "enshrined in U.S. Law." Sean went on "remembering" what he understood of the decision, but he was just reading the Wikipedia entry that was, obviously, on his computer screen. Worse, he staged this recitation as if it was actual recollection, never giving credit, pretending as if the thoughts and phrases were being retrieved from his own head; at one point, he said "the year, if I recall, was 1966." He went on to read the first three paragraphs word for word. Well, almost word for word. The Wikipedia page said "Miranda was subsequently retried," but Hannity said "Miranda was subsequently retired," a phrase of the senseless.
What kind of a man pretends to recall something, even theatrically searching around for the next word, when it is right there in front of him on a computer screen? And wasn't Hannity's deceit particularly irritating given his incessant criticism of Obama's teleprompter dependence?

armed citizens - citizens on the march (1997 second amendment)

Programming note: This is not Armed Citizens from NYC.

13 years ahead of its time, this is TeaCore. Lyrics that would make any Teabagger proud. Of course, my Liberal ass thinks the lyrics are laughable, but I dig the music.

Before I ripped this, I downloaded it from one of my favorite mp3 blogs, Violation. That copy sounded a little noisy to me, so I started to rip mine. It was just as noisy. Probably just the way the record is. So I ended up just amplifying the one from Violation. So obviously thanks to Vile76.

read me my rights as if I didn't know this

John McCain is not the keenest legal mind.
It would have been a serious mistake to have read the suspect in the attempted Times Square car bombing his Miranda rights, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said Tuesday.

"Obviously that would be a serious mistake...at least until we find out as much information we have," McCain said during an appearance on "Imus in the Morning"
An American citizen was arrested for a crime committed on U.S. soil. And McCain thinks it would be wise to find out as much as you can from the guy, then Mirandize him, so that all the information you got from him is now inadmissible in court. Brilliant!

times square

Regarding the attempted Times Square bombing, The Daily Beast has the following headline:

Now, I would never advise underestimating the will and capabilities of any terrorist group. But when a "global plot" results in this:

The car contained three propane tanks, fireworks, two five gallon gasoline containers, two clocks with batteries, electrical wires and a 4ft by 2ft metal box.
then I think that anti-terrorism efforts in this country and abroad deserve some credit.  Of course I'm not advocating complacency, but when the latest sinister plot involves buying a car off of Craigslist and then heading to Home Depot, Chinatown, and AM/PM, I'm thinking maybe the terrorist capabilities have been weakened.  I'd be embarrassed to claim credit for that plan.
