Youth Gone Mad - Isolation EP (1991 Vital Music)

Longtime LA/NY punks featuring Paul "Ena" Kostabi, who also played with White Zombie, who, if you don't know, is gonna ride in here, into this little sleepy town, on their death machines, and take all your freaking heads off with one swift swoop for their guitars, motherfuckers!

Also, "NRG", a great song, was on the recently posted Nothing To Believe In comp (as "Energy") but this version is superior.

The Bristles - Generation Annihilation (1994 Beer City Records)

Not to be confused with Seattle's Bristle or Sweden's Bristles, this Bristles were a mid-90's snotty, raw punk band from New Jersey (and yet another band who I first heard on the excellent Spinnin' The Chamber comp.)

My wife knows me well.

Anyways, I'll try to get some music posted tonight, and then I'll be out of commission (mp3-wise, at least) until Saturday.

Merry Christmas!

Your Mother - Pasture Of Muppets Demo (1993 No Label)

Reader Marcel has been sending me some pretty cool tapes, and for me, this is the coolest. If you know Your Mother, then you should be familiar with most of these songs, though they may have different names here than the One Big Inside Joke album (which are in brackets for reference].  The cover lists "Flowertown" and "At The Dentist" (which I assume is "Root-Canal Field Trip"), but they aren't on here.

  1. Purpose [P.S. Purpose]
  2. End Of The Story [The Really Long One]
  3. The Dumbest Song I Ever Heard [You May As Well Skip This Song]
  4. Diane (I'm Dying) [Same]

Nothing To Believe In (1995 Know Records)

Nothing To Believe In! (CD, Compilation) album cover

Good lord I listed to this comp a lot in the 90's. But then I again, I had locked on to most of the  hopefully not forgotten "minor" SoCal punk labels in the 90's (i.e Know, Lethal, Theologian). No slight intended on that, they just seemed a bit purer in motive than Dr. Strange, Fearless, and Hopeless. But I don't mean to slight them either (well, mostly. We're not counting the 2000's here)  . I don't even know what I'm trying to say. Forget it.

Anyways, personal faves on this are the Suspects, All Day, Apocalypse Hoboken, No Consent, and Moral Crux. Kinda have a soft spot for that Youth In Asia track as well.

1) The Suspects "The Blitz"
2) PUS "Scapeghost"
3) Spunk "Supertough"
4) All Day "Friends Are Forever"
5) Apocalypse Hoboken "All American"
6) Voodoo Glow Skulls "Dog Pile" (live on KPFK)
7) Wrong Way Right "Stay Home"
8) Drain Bramaged "Livin' In The City" (Fear)

15) Glue Gun "Self Respect"
16) The Meatmen "I Want Drugs"
17) Das Klown "Eye Kill"
18) riotgun. "You're Right, I'm Wrong"

The Conservatives - This Album Is A Sovereign Nation (1998 Sonic Swirl / City Of Romance)

In my opinion, pound for pound, Minneapolis is the finest punk rock city the country. But Drew Carey and the Rock 'N Roll Hall Of Fame be damned, Cleveland is definitely in that conversation. The Conservatives live up to their city's storied legacy. This sucker rips from beginning to end. Hard to pigeonhole. Has a certain swagger that reminds me of the New Bomb Turks (lazy Ohio comparison, I know) and even The Bronx at times. "City Of Romance" channels Blatz's "Lullaby" to an interesting effect. This looks to be the only thing they've done, which is a damned tragedy.

ABCs Of Punk (1996 Whirled Records)

ABCs Of Punk (CD, Compilation) album cover

As a Quadiliacha completist, I have been trying to get this for a long time, and now thanks to a reader, I have it. And hence so do you.

Looking at the line-up, it's self evident this is a great comp. See if you can figure out the theme.

The only bad thing I have to say about it is the complete and total copout in filling the "T" slot with The Fresh-O-Matics.  No offense to them, but them and Four Hundred Years should have duked it out for the F slot. You managed to find bands for XY and Z but couldn't find a band who's name legitimately started with a T?

  1. Action Patrol - Benign (Live)
  2. Braid - Bridge to Canada
  3. Cornelius - Novelties of our Grandfathers
  4. Doc Hopper - Iron Fist
  5. Eagle Bravo - Steppin' Out
  6. Four Hundred Years - Sequence

What Are You Looking At? Comp (1996 Switchblade Records)

What Are You Looking At? (CD, Compilation) album cover

I. A couple of readers have recently sent me stuff in digital and physical form. I really appreciate it, and will get it all up eventually. I don't like to post more than one album a day, and I have my own stuff I wanna get posted, so be patient, and thank you again.

II. Back in the day I had a boatload of CD's and records stolen, and this comp (along with a few more upcoming comps) were among them. So I was very glad to see this in the care package I recently received from reader JN. I'm guessing on the year of release here, but 96 sounds about right, as I think it was the release after Link 80 / Subincision split (if you go to Discogs to verify, please know that I made that submission).

Anyways, great comp with a mix of straight ahead punk and pop punk. Personal faves on this are the tracks from the Teen Idols (duh), The Boils, and The Halflings (I had this song on a mixtape for years and could not figure out who sung it until tonight!). VBJ disagrees and knows that Buglite is the standout here.
  1. Teen Idols - Come Dance With Me
  2. Rumblers - Ride Johnny Ride
  3. Link 80 - Verbal Kint
  4. Halflings - One Thousand Teardrops
  5. Beautys - Goldslobber

Lefty Lucy - Don't Do Anything I Wouldn't Do ‎EP (1994 7-10 Split Records)

Don't Do Anything I Wouldn't Do (Vinyl, 7", 33 ⅓ RPM) album cover

Not to confused with Milwaukee's excellent mid-2000's band Lefty Loosie, this is Minneanapolis' excellent mid-90's band Lefty Lucy. They were sort of a precursor to the Selby Tigers, featuring Arzu Gokcen and Dave Gatchell. Great stuff, and excellent non-ska use of trombone, IMHO.

Kip Adotta - I Hope I'm Not Out Of Line (1981 Laff Records)

Another curveball here. Possibly the first comedy record I've ever posted. I saw Kip Addotta a lot when I was a kid, The Tonight Show, Make Me Laugh, etc, and then I pretty much never saw him again. This is from 1981, so no exactly woke. Could this possibly be the origin of the Dogs/Balls joke? Anyways, if you have an 80's hack comedy fetish, here ya go.

Who knows, maybe I'll find a Bruce Baum album somewhere.

Letters From The Landfill Comp (2004 Left Of The Dial)

Letters From The Landfill album cover+

I'm a little astonished this isn't more widely available (if it is, let me know and I'll redirect the link). The This Is My Fist tracks are on Bandcamp, but I can't find the album in it's whole form anywhere. A shame, because this thing is great from beginning to end. Pure Bay Area. Shotwell alone should sell you on this. And then you add This Is My Fist? Come on. But that's just side one. Side two has Abandon, with Jake Filth and Matt Parrillo, and Peels, who, dare I say, show a bit of a Hickey influence? Maybe? You tell me. Fantastic comp.

The Nimrods - Once Again Saving The World Takes A back Seat To A Good Beer (Dr. Dream Records)

A very overlooked album. The Nimrods are a legendary compilation band, with excellent contributions to many comps that get mentioned around here a lot (Back Asswards, Punk?). As far as I know, this is their only full length (not including a cassette with the same name but different songs. Any one have the scoop on that?). I think being on Doctor Dream killed this (as with the excellent Sacramento band Welt). When I think of Doctor Dream, I think of a particular type of L.A. punk, and this ain't that . This is a solid pop-punk album that probably would have gotten a lot more traction on a different label. "I.R.S." and "I Don't Really Care" are legit great songs that are in my personal pop-punk canon.

I just ripped this and was about to queue it to post in a few days, and then I noticed it's already on Bandcamp, so go get it there (I try to post things that are not easily available on the internet or on sharing services).

I'm only mentioning this because you can buy 267 hardcore releases there for $20. A steal!

Electric Summer - Love Me Destroyer (2000 Soda Jerk Records)

I discovered Electric Summer during one of my late 90's Amoeba Records $1 CD section expeditions. It was their Shock album (maybe I'll post that if y'all like this), and I was immediately taken in by the nonsensical brilliance of songs like "Shock" and "Golden Dogs", plus I just have a soft spot for Japanese punk (although, as exchange students, they had moved to Denver at the time). I kind of forgot about them a few years later, and am only now realizing they continued to put out albums through 2009. So now I'm going back to see if the magic of Shock lasted past that album.

It did.

Longest song is 2:23, I have no idea what any of the songs are about, a little spastic, a little catchy, and a little NOFX-y at times, I love it. Hopefully you will too, because these guys should not be in dollar bins.

The Nimrods - Greenday EP (1997 Insubordination Records)

I first heard The Nimrods on the Punk? comp, and then on the Back Asswards comp. Absolutely loved both of their contributions.  So I bought their full length, which I didn't enjoy as much. But I admittedly have a short attention span and have always been biased towards comps and EPs over LPs. So of course I love this 7". Although, truth be told, when I first heard it I was a little confused, as Side A sounds much more like the Knockoffs or even Nine Pound Hammer than The Nimrods (love both of those bands - not meant to be a slight). Side B set the record straight, though. Juvenile, immature, and sloppy. Right up my alley.

Swindle was pretty popular in San Diego in the mid-late 90's, but I don't know if that popularity expanded anywhere else. They opened for everyone, and did a split with Blink-182 (post-Chesire Cat, pre-Dude Ranch). Nothing complicated, just straight ahead mid-90's punk, including a Screeching Weasel cover.

I've been sonically revisiting my mulleted days recently, and two things stick out: Rough Cutt was better than 90% of mid-80's hard rock/metal bands (it's still cringe-worthy in retrospect, but I stick by my point), and Rose Tattoo, while influential on many cool U.S. bands, still should have been much bigger in the U.S. That is all.

Leather - Leather EP (2012 Skeleton Head Records)

This is a 2012 7" version of a 2009 cassette.

I love this band. They have the mix of confidence and reckless abandon I find lacking in a lot stuff I listen to. I hear raw early Nirvana mixed with later Black Flag; you may hear something else entirely, as comparisons are not my strong suit. Sinkhole - Tumble Mat EP (1995 Dr. Strange Records)

Tumble Mat album cover

Mid 90's Boston pop-punk, though there would be no shame in confusing Sinkhole for  a West Coast/Cruz Records band. This is not an EP I thought I'd need to rip. I thought this was a pretty common EP, and maybe it is, being a Dr. Strange release, but I don't see it on any of the usual outposts, and the two b-side tracks  (including a Pat Benatar cover) do not appear on any other releases.

I didn't realize this doesn't really exist in digital form online until everyone's favorite vegan beardo recently bought my copy. So I'm doing the world a favor, cause this is awesome.

So when I bought this, I thought it was, in the words of Tesco Vee, one of "those ultra-hip, one-syllable bands like Live, Lush, Beck, Swirl, Blur" but nope, it's yet another unheralded, forgotten (though they did re-unite last year  mid-90's San Diego band that you'll find in our local thrift stores.

The older I get, the harder it is for me to make genre classifications. Alternative? Power Pop? I dunno. They refer to themselves as "Surf Power-Pop" so lets go with that. If I were to make a comparison, I'd say a poppier version of Dig.

Punk Diary: 1970-1979 (1994 not on label)

This is an interview that cam with the book Punk Diary: 1970-1979 by George Gimarc. Despte the title, most of the action in the book is post-1975, and spends a lot of time on bands I would never think of as being punk forefathers (OMD!?). It really, really should matter if there is a tape out there of the President of the United States using the n-word. But the reality is that it really, really doesn't matter if it exists. Sad, but true.

As should be obvious by now, for 40% of the country, Trump using the n-word would be a feature, not a bug. For another 9-11% it would be, "yeah, that's really bad, but the economy....".

We're fucked.

Matt Frado Compilation (2008 Welfare Records)

A tribute album to Matt Frado, who at one point was in all of the bands here (+ many more that aren't on the comp). Until listening to this, I had no idea who Matt Frado was. But looking into it, he was a beloved musician in the Boston punk/hardcore/metal scene who played multiple instruments. The bands here run the gamut: death metal, black metal, thrash, punk, hardcore, and some sleaze rock. Unholy Goatfucker is the highlight here for me, but I found something to like about all the bands. This is quite a varied and rad musical legacy to leave behind at the age of 24. I didn't know ya, Matt, but R.I.P.

BTW, I initially bought this because one of the bands is called the Rocket Queens, and I remember that Craigums was in a GNR cover band of the same name. Well, this is obviously not that Rocket Queens, but if that RQ has any recorded output, please send my way.

Everready - A Not So Sunny Day In Dodge City EP (1993 Campgropund Records)

A Not So Sunny Day In Dodge City (Vinyl, 7", 33 ⅓ RPM) album cover

Okay, so until I ripped this EP, I never realized they were the exact same versions that are on the Reinheitsgebot CD. But then I did, so I dumped the rips. I admit it, these are just the CD versions re-tagged for completest nerds.

If you know this blog at all, you know I love Everready, so no need to elaborate.

  1. Never Walk Away

  3. Leaving On A Jet Plane

Radon - In Your Home EP (1994 Ms. Cake's Records)

In Your Home! (Vinyl, 7", EP) for sale

I kind of assumed this has already been digitized, but the version of "Bryan's World" here is different than the live version on the We Bare All compilation.

I remember the first time I heard "Kibbles and Bits", I liked it, but thought it was kind of cheesy. Now it's one of my favorite Radon songs.  That's how Radon works. One second you like 'em, the next you are obsessed.

The Rickets - Bottom Of The Bottle EP (1995 Puke Records)

Bottom Of The Bottle (Vinyl, 7", 33 â…“ RPM, EP) for sale

Bainbridge Island punk rock. If you have the Slice Of Lemon comp, this is the bad that does the wonderful "Diet Punk". I'm too lazy to do the research right now, but if I remember correctly, the Rickets had something to do with Pud and/or the Murder City Devils.

  1. Crybaby
  2. Oly Roller

Fabric - Woolly Mammoth (1997 Scrimshaw Records)

Woolly Mammoth (CD, Album) for sale

A little departure from the norm. I've returned to my early/mid 90's habit of buying anything cheap that looks like it has potential to be cool. You never know, right?

I can't find out anything about Fabric. Lo-fi, mainly acoustic, indie pop from the Midwest. Pretty interesting, kinda Ween-ish and Beck-like at times.

  1. Deaf Baby
  2. Rubberman
  3. Bring On The Girls

Vacation Bible School / Bi-Furious Split EP (2008 Let's Pretend / Lucky Gator)

Vacation Bible School / Bi-Furious (Vinyl, 7") album cover

Hey, I'm back. It's been so hot, the last thing I've wanted to do is sit in my un-air conditioned office and rip records. It's still hot, but duty calls, so here I am.

I don't know jack about either of these bands. They might be from Chicago? I might have saw/seen VBS at Awesomefest?  In any case both of these bands play fast and keep it loose. I like it.

  1. Bi-Furious - Sean Leonard: Reg'l Genius
  2. Bi-Furious - Tallahassee Nun
  3. Bi-Furious - Give Pizza Chance
  4. Bi-Furious - I Hate (The News)

Edicius - Neckbreaker (1996 Wax Ring Records)

You don't need to google it, 'Edicius' is 'Suicide' spelled backwards.

Mid-90's Los Angeles thrash in a Scatterbrain sort of way. You know, it's not that heavy or fast but no other genre really fits. This style wasn't cool in 1996, which kind of means that it actually was cool. Maybe?

Friends of the blog: you are not going to like this. But hopefully I can rope in some metalheads looking for impossible to find metal albums. When it's not on slsk or Discogs (I just added it), you know you got a rare one.

Fat Day - Bound For Glory (1995 100% Breakfast)

I first heard Fat Day on the Spinnin' The Chamber (c'mon Josh, post more stuff) comp and immediately liked them. Then I heard "Knute Rockne" on the Ass Backwards comp, like turned to love. Eight short blasts of spastic snotty punk.

Plainfield - Not Enough Food EP (1994 Depression Records)

Smelly Mustafa's psycho noise punk band. Plainfield did a split with Fresno's own Circus Bogus that I'm still trying to track down. I think Little John from the Fresno days has it for sale. In any case, once I get it I'll post it. I remember seeing Circus Bogus play in Fresno and seeing Smelly in the crowd watching looking like the most 80's dad I'd ever seen. Mustache, short shorts, knee high socks, some Trax or something, it was glorious.

I'm not sure what trigger warnings I should be posting, but yeah, tread carefully.

The Twenty-Two's / The Disenchanted Split EP (1996 Mother Box Records)

While Zoppo wasn't my cup of tea, The Twenty-Two's are my quad espresso over ice. Exactly what I like and need. No frills, raw, fast punk. Post punk explosion, pre-bandanacore . Years ago I posted their split with Positive State, and I loved that as well. They never really caught on, but man they were good. The Disenchanted is a little more on the nose with their brand of punk. Not bad, but for me, this split is all about the Twenty-Two's.

  1. The Twenty-Two's - Label-Free
  2. The Twenty-Two's - My Friends
  3. The Twenty-Two's - Never Suspect
  4. The Disenchanted - Chameleon

  6. The Disenchanted - Serve & Protect

Zoppo - Chi Practica Lo Impare A Zoppicare! (1997 The Drowning Man)

Sometimes when you've maxed out your shipping on Discogs, you just start adding interesting looking cheap records. Had no idea what to expect. Not really my cup of tea, but it's not bad. Indie rock with a lot of effects from the Netherlands. Yuri Landman played in this band for a bit (including on this). He invents musical instruments for artists, including Sonic Youth and Half Japanese.

Record is a little noisy, but the scratches on Grand Prix are intentional, I think. There's nothing on the record or in Audacity to make me think otherwise.

Bulwark Fail

I'm was reading Frederick Taylor's Dresden, and came across this paragraph:
The Communists could have combined with the Social Democrats to form an anti-Nazi bulwark but refused, claiming that the Social Democrats were, in effect, the real fascists (one of the main Communist taunts was to call them “social fascists”). The Nazis, on the other hand, were simply a symptom of the decline of the wretched petty bourgeoisie. Therefore the important thing for loyal Communists was to oppose the Social Democrats—not the Nazis, who were doomed in any case, along with the class they represented.
It's eerie how much this dovetails with 2016, with Bernie supporters opposing mainstream Democrats. I know this comparison has been made and analyzed a gajillion times. But it was interesting to come across it in a book from 2005.

The sad part is, it's probably going to happen in 2020 as well. The purity tests will begin with the Kavanaugh confirmation.
