So, I was at work, and the 20-somethings I supervise were playing some sort of slick, Kenny G-esque muzak. I asked them, respectfully, what the fuck is this? The answer, "lo-fi chill beats", a phrase I've seen all over when I search for playlists, but never cared to explore. I don't know what I thought it would be, but it wasn't this. So I followed up with, "what do you think 'lo-fi' means?" Crickets. So, I had to put on my Grumpy Old Man hat (I prefer "mentor"). Words mean things! You can't just call anything anything. How did "lo-fi" come to mean "overproduced"?
Your aunt in the 90's, listening to Dave Koz? She wasn't lame. She was ahead of her time. She wasn't listening to smooth jazz. She was listening to "lo-fi chill beats".
Ok. Some underground hip-hop for a change of pace. Self-released (I think) in 2003. I've been trying to lock down who the MCs, Dub Diode and Rhyme Mutilator, are but didn't have any luck. I think one of them is a radio producer in LA. I actually messaged him to find out, but no response yet. I may be a little OCD.
“Station Lock” is slower, kind of hypnotic. Plays at 33 1/3. “Authorized Vehicles” is more jagged, plays at 45rpm. Sometimes they rhyme slow, sometimes they rhyme quick.
