4 Bands 4 Chaos: A Boise Hardcore / Punk Compilation LP [1998, no label]

This is the second Boise comp I've posted, and maybe the third Boise associated release? This one has Scums Of Fucking Society, S.A.M., Dissident, and Dilapidated. There's nothing revolutionary going on here, and that's fine by me.

Another Stupid Tiny Compilation 7" [1999 Stupid Records]

Stupid Records was a Colorado label, but I don't know if these bands are. This is mostly lo-fi weirdo shit. Band on this are Fox Force Five, Space Kitchen, Cindy Wonderful, Chipmunk Of Death, Wryeteous Pybayk Jammbory, and Fea.

Hundred Pound Head – Covered In Ash CS [1992 Self-released]

Found this pretty rare cassette on a work trip to Atlanta. Hundred Pound Head were a NYC indie band, and from what I can tell, this cassette is all of the output of the band and band members. Odd, as this is pretty good. Has some 80's British alternative influence.

McPherson Struts - Top Fuel Boogie CD [2000 Dust Run Records]

Call it what you want, psychobilly, cowpunk, rockabilly, greaser punk, I have no idea what the distinctions are. All I know is they do a Nine Pound Hammer cover, so they are cool by me. Some of the band members are from the South, but Garrett Smythe (R.I.P.) and Dave Dick from Deadbolt are in the band, and it was recorded at Gar Wood's place, so there is definitely a San Diego connection here. Track 14 is not listed on the release, BTW.

Pimp [Pimpidy Pimp, Du] Compilation CD [1999 Curly & Spike Records]

Pretty rare comp of what I would bet are Orange County (CA) ska/pop/punk/skate bands, maybe LA County at the widest. Let me test my hypothesis and go down the tracklist...

1. Buck Wild - Santa Barbara. Okay so let's all it SoCal bands.

2. Charmless - Can't find anything on them, but tey released something in Isota records from San Francisco. Uh oh. Maye California bands?

3. Flipsyde - Minneapolis! Hypothesis dead.

The Fly Bitches – The Holy Trinity, Art, And Other Lies CD [1997 Rectangle Records]

Had to leave town for a funeral last week. Life is just now caught up enough for me to post again. Was up in the central coast of California, which is honestly one of my favorite places on Earth. I grew up so close to it, and took it for granted. One of the few areas that could lure me from San Diego.

There's not much out there on The Fly Bitches. They are from Durham, NC, and the very awesome Punk Guy, who I'm sure you're following, posted their demo (engineered by Stephen Eggerton) a few years ago.

Weirdo punk, like if Victim's Family was part of the Secret Center scene.

Supergirls – Good Old Punk Rock In The Key Of D Minor 7" [1997 Liberation Records]

Supergirls OD'd on How To Clean Everything and filtered it through their Southern California roots. Recording is a bit noisy. Includes a sincere (?) Eagles cover, oh joy.

Bender - Two Months... [2001 Self-released]

You may have noticed that I've transitioned from just ripping my vinyl collection to posting some more obscure stuff. It's generally stuff that has absolutely no presence online. No streaming, no Bandcamp, no YouTube. You'll find that I lean heavy on bands from San Diego, as that's what's gonna be in local thrift shops. There are two main reasons I do this.

First, I want to make sure the artists are recognized for their work. Even if it's not my cup of tea, each release took someone to write the songs, perform them, record it, mix it, master it, manufacture it, distribute it. It meant something to a lot of people and for it to just disappear is kind of, well, sad. Plus, I learned the hard way, after posting something, being kind of negative about it, and then having one of the artists comment on my comments (in a nice way), that it's fucked up for a talentless fuck like me to be publicly negative about someone else's work. I don't have to like it, but I don't need to fucking post about it. I'm not an artist, and I'm not a music critic. So I'll lean in to just getting stuff out there and letting all 16 of you make up your own minds.

Second, maybe having it out there will help it sell in my Discogs store. See, I can still be an non-altruistic dick. Now let's move some units!

So that brings us to Bender. A two-man band (mostly) from somewhere in San Diego County I assume. See the two paragraphs up, sentence number five.

Spazm - A Blinding Light [1996 Spazm Attack Records]

Kind of an odd one here. Spazm is from Australia, and that's about all I know? Some members have ties to a jazz rock band called Trout Fishing In Quebec. And this is definitely mostly jazz/funk rock, with occasional hints of what sounds like an alternative Toy Dolls (mostly in the Olga-esque vocals)? Who they mostly remind me off is Sinister Sam, this obscure 90's band from San Jose. In case, they are definitely goofy, and won't be everyone's cup of tea.

    11.09.2025

The Kent 3 - Coin Of The Realm 7" [1993 Empty Records]

For my money, The Kent 3 were the cream of the crop for 90's garage power pop (although The Fall-Outs and The Hi-Fives make strong cases [I am differentiating from garage punk, btw]). I almost didn't post this because there is a Bandcamp link, but lucky for you, that link is as dead as Zed.

    11.08.2025

Yolanda - The Collage Of Musical Knowledge 10" [2003, Tuesday Records]

This one is coming out of......leftfield.

If you don't get my stupid little joke, apparently leftfield is a genre within dance / electronic. I don't know what it's supposed to mean. I'm old and like punk rock. But it kinda sorta pisses me off, because Discogs allows all these microvariants of styles for Electronic music, but for punk and hardcore there ain't much.  There's no "skate punk" which is a pretty widely
used term (I guess the equivalent is "melodic hardcore"), no "Garage Punk", no "Ska Punk."

Anyways, I bought this on my M-Theory bargain bin spree, thinking it was indie or punk. Nope! This ain't my wheelhouse, but I don't mind it. And it's nowhere to be found online, no streamers, no YouTube (well, there is now, because I just uploaded it).

If you're a fan of breakbeat, leftfield, or dub, or know what any of that even means, check it out. Maybe it will blow up and this will be the thing that gets me paid.

    11.07.2025

Mid Carson July & The Grey A.M. Split 7" [1998 Da Capo Al Fine]

Not proud of it, not embarrassed by it, but I did go through a lite emo phase in the late 90's. Mainly stuff like this, the Jazz June, Sore Loser, that Get Up Kids album that had 10 Minutes on it (still a great fucking song) etc. It was over in a flash though, so to this day I could not name a song by the bands that followed and got huge. Don't know a single song by Taking Back Thursday, New Found Glory, etc. Didn't keep me from mocking them, but yeah, no idea. Maybe they are great. There's no way to tell.

Anyways, I ripped this years ago, meaning to post it, but never did, and I don't remember why?

    11.06.2025

The Hitch - S/T LP [2004 South Spit Records]

Maybe your hobby is going to record stores, say M-Theory, and perusing their 5 for $10 bin, and just buying random interesting looking stuff, because why not? And most of the time you get home, listen, and realize "yeah, this is definitely a $2 record". But sometimes you stumble upon something that makes you go "what the fuck is this, why have I never heard of it, and how did it end up in the $2 bin?"

Well, this is the latter. Fucking love this. The Hitch, from Arcata, CA (it's in Humboldt County), where apparently they are local legends, play jammy 70's Southern rock, channeled through the Pacific Northwest sludge. Considering where they are from, this is like the epitome of Stoner Rock.

Loose Change / Buford - Split 7" [1995 Noise Patch]

I first posted this back in 2010 (which, to prove the enshittification of Google, does not show up in a search of Loose Change Buford Noise Patch Blogspot). I normally only re-post when asked, but somehow these files got deleted - not from MediaFire (RIP), but from my hard drive. So, a re-rip and re-up.

    Short Memories

Like, I get why today's election went the way it did, and Republicanism was clearly rejected. The 10 months of Trump II has felt like 10 years. But that's what confuses me.... so did Trump I! I just don't understand how the 4 years of the Biden administration - not great, but mostly competent and not terrible in context - wiped so many people's memories of the Trump years. Lots of "it wasn't that bad" from people who knew it was that bad! The same sort of rosy retrospection happened with GWB. I'm pretty confident, Trumpism will continue to be rejected while he is in office. But WTF happens to people brains when he is not in office is an all-time mystery.

One In The Chamber - S/T 12" [2007, Beneath The Gallows]

One In The Chamber from Oakland, CA. Not the Australian or Canadian or Kentucky-ian one. Blackened metallic hardcore. Ugh. I hate micro-classifying things like this, but I don't know how to avoid it. Bay area influences abound. Members have been in Ludicra, so there's a little bit of a black metal, and Eldopa, so there's some East Bay Menace / Grimple influence as well. The dual vocals, I hear some Fuckface?

    These are all good things.

    11.03.2025

Blowhole 2000 / Big Tension Split 7" [1994 Scheming Intelligentsia Records]

Two very obscure San Diego bands, doing the early 90's San Diego thing and no I do not mean Blink. Blowhole 2000 would morph into Waxing Pathetic. Big Tension put out a 10" and a CD.

    11.02.2025

Overwhelming Colorfast / The Meices 7" [1995 Trademark Records]

Straight up, Overwhelming Colorfast are one of the most underrated power pop bands of the 90's. The Meices never really got their due, either, but I never stanned for them the way I do OC.

Side note, if I'm remembering correctly, in 1993 I saw OC play a day set at Fresno State Vintage Days, and then booked it over to the Cadillac Club to catch Helmet and the Jesus Lizard. A fucking great day in Fresno.

This is OC cleaning up The Meices "Don't Let The Soap Run Out", and The Meices dirtying up OC's "Try".

    Texass - Chanel #5 7" [1994 IFA Records]

I hate the fucking Dodgers. Only silver lining is they are from California. Other than that, fuck 'em. I can't talk too much shit about them though. Gotta give it up. Organizationally, they run things right. Do they spend a lot of money? Sure, so what? It got them two titles in two years. Mets and Yankees spent a ton as well, and have nothing to show. And spending money is a far better option than whatever the Pirates are doing. And in all my years of Dodger hating, this is by far the least despisable iteration. I just can find a lot of hate for Ohtani, Betts, or Freeman. I've even warmed a little bit to that rat-looking Max Muncy. But but but, while I'm sure the majority of baseball players are secret or not-so-secret Trump lovers, this team has Blake Treinen and Clayton Kershaw, so fuck them forever no matter what.

Once I heard "Super Sound Racing" by Zeke, I bought everything, and I mean everything, else available  on IFA Records. Which I'm pretty sure, at the time, was just this.

Texass, also from Seattle, is no Zeke, but c'mon, no one is. This is slowed down and sleazier. Enjoyable in it's own right.

    10.31.2025

This Is Lemon Grove Vol 3 Flexi [2018, Club Lemon Records]

Lemon Grove is a city east of San Diego that blurs with a lot of it's neighboring cities and neighborhoods. I've been here a while, and I have no idea where Lemon Grove ends and Spring Valley starts. The name "Lemon Grove" makes it sound like a lovely rural suburb, which it was at one point, but nowadays it's a little rough around the edges. Which is the perfect environment for a punk scene that punches way above it's weight, as evidenced by this flexi.

Bands featured here are Sustivity, Instinct, Project Sellout (PSO), Instinct, and Stay Away. It's all 80's influenced hardcore, but those influences vary. It's a flexi, so sound is a little rough. But from beginning to end, this is a great hardcore record by excellent hardcore bands that deserve to be heard outside a particular scene.

Exempt Specimenz - Station Lock / Authorized Vehicles [2003, Self-released]

So, I was at work, and the 20-somethings I supervise were playing some sort of slick, Kenny G-esque muzak. I asked them, respectfully, what the fuck is this? The answer, "lo-fi chill beats", a phrase I've seen all over when I search for playlists, but never cared to explore. I don't know what I thought it would be, but it wasn't this. So I followed up with, "what do you think 'lo-fi' means?" Crickets. So, I had to put on my Grumpy Old Man hat (I prefer "mentor"). Words mean things! You can't just call anything anything. How did "lo-fi" come to mean "overproduced"?

Your aunt in the 90's, listening to Dave Koz? She wasn't lame. She was ahead of her time. She wasn't listening to smooth jazz. She was listening to "lo-fi chill beats".

Ok. Some underground hip-hop for a change of pace. Self-released (I think) in 2003.  I've been trying to lock down who the MCs, Dub Diode and Rhyme Mutilator, are but didn't have any luck. I think one of them is  a radio producer in LA. I actually messaged him to find out, but no response yet. I may be a little OCD.

“Station Lock” is slower, kind of hypnotic. Plays at 33 1/3.  “Authorized Vehicles” is more jagged, plays at 45rpm. Sometimes they rhyme slow, sometimes they rhyme quick.

    10.29.2025

The Sirs - The Sirs 7" [2008 Psychic Volt]

This is so good. Reminds me of so many different bands, but it's hard for me to pin some down. But I'll try. Ramones, obviously, but also a little Briefs, and even a bit of Off With Their Heads in a weird way. I don't know anything about this band that chose a difficult fucking name to google except they are from New Jersey and they are excellent.

    10.28.2025

Fahrenheit AGX - Jean Charles De Menezes [2022 Regurgitated Semen] (Agathocles)

You are only getting the FAGX side of this split LP. I did not see it digitized anywhere online. If you want the Fractured side, you're gonna have to throw them a tribute at their Bandcamp page.

So let’s talk about the Fahrenheit AGX side. Fahrenheit AGX is what happens when two members of Agathocles decide to channel their inner NEOS through a 4-track with zero regard for production (not that Agathocles cares either, but I digress). Twenty tracks of raw powerviolence. Think Lack of Interest if they focused on politics rather  than scene politics.

Sadly, I had to google Jean Charles De Menzes. Props to FAGX for not forgetting.

    Sellout

Just an FYI, I'm gonna play around with ads and some other ways to try to maybe make a couple of bucks. I've done the buymeacoffee thing which raised a grand total of $0. I'm not going to some Substack BS. I like Blogger.

As most of my posts are of other people's creative endeavors, it ain't right for me to try and profit off it. But. It does take time and effort to rip, tag, upload, post, etc. and I feel like I'd post more if there were some sort of incentive. Even more discussion and comments would help.

I know there's not that many people checking out the blog, and I'm not trying to guilt anyone into anything. I'm more looking for a way to motivate myself to post more.

Just keep that in mind when you see ads. And forgive me.

    10.26.2025

CleanX - Mouthful O' Shit [1996, Dental Records] (pre-Death By Stereo)

I posted the first CleanX 7" 15 years ago. Dang. That's crazy. To reiterate (and get all that sweet, sweet Epitaph SEO traffic) CleanX was an 90's Orange County band featuring Paul and Jim Miner, who later helped found members of Death By Stereo.

The Horror Show We’re All Living In

Back in the '80s, when I was in middle school, sleepovers meant scary movies. Me and my friends, like most kids, I assume, would crash at each other's houses and rent whatever horror flick we could convince an adult to check out for us. One weekend, that adult brought home Faces of Death. And holy shit, that wrecked me.

I spiraled. Couldn’t stop thinking about my parents dying. Fell into a depressive fog that lasted for months. It was a dark chapter in an already dark childhood. Later, in my twenties, I went through the whole rotten.com phase. I knew better, but I clicked anyway. And yeah, it messed me up again. So I’m not naive—gore’s been out there for decades. If you wanted it, you could find it.

But now? You no longer have to look.

This week, my 14-year-old—without even trying—watched the brutal murders of Iryna Zarutska and Charlie Kirk. No warning. No search. Just... there. And she barely flinched. That hit me like a truck. I’m back in that depressive fog again. We’re just casually broadcasting snuff films now? The Zarutska video is literally embedded on Wikipedia.

I'm a raw nerve right now, so maybe I'm overreacting. Russia’s flying drones into Poland. Israel’s bombing Qatar. The U.S. is executing people at sea. Another school shooting in Colorado. DC. Chicago. Trump. It’s all piling up and I feel like I’m drowning in it. Maybe I’m being overly sensitive while worrying about mass desensitization. Maybe it’s just one of those weeks. I know I lean toward doomerism, but a broken clock....

    Ballpark Grub

This was one of the popular items at whatever Ranger's stadium is called. More proof that Petco Park just destroys most other ballparks in all aspects, including food.

    8.26.2025

    Nutz!

While I was in Dallas, in the year of our lord 2025, I saw actual Truck Nutz out in the wild. In 2025. Truck Nutz. Oh, Texas.

    Fisticuffs - Apocalypse Now [7", 1997, Motherbox]

"But her emails" memes would be so tired and trite if there wasn't always some fresh new horror that it applies to.

Angry punk from Pennsylvania. That's about all I know! Reminds me of Christ On A Crutch at certain moments.

    Orthodoxy

Fintan O’Toole in the New Yorker:

…the Great Hunger was a very modern event, and one shaped by a mind-set that is now again in the ascendant. The poor are the authors of their own misery. The warning signs of impending environmental disaster can be ignored. Gross inequalities are natural, and God-given. The market must be obeyed at all costs. There is only one thing about the Irish famine that now seems truly anachronistic—millions of refugees were saved because other countries took them in. That, at least, would not happen now.

Bad Liquor Pond - Let The River Come 7" [2009]

Pretty great neo-psych from Charm City. "Electric Splash" is available on the "Blue Smoke Yellow Sky" album (not sure if this exact version), while "Let the River Come" is only available on this 7".

Dough Mane - Ever Aching [CS, 2015]

I have heard many people say that the first thing they do when they open Connections on the NYT Games app is to hit shuffle. This is beyond stupid. It's giving you a free hint!

The rational for shuffling is that when they place say, BRICK and MORTAR together, your mind wants to connected them right away, so you need to shuffle them to get out of that thinking.

You see where I'm going right? More times than not, BRICK and MORTAR will NOT be connected, so now you can figure out what other words each connects with. But no, you had to go shuffle, and now you may actually try to connect BRICK and MORTAR because you're stupid and don't know a free hint when you see one.

    Anyways.

Dough Mane is a San Diego based experimental-noise-ambient artist. That's all I know!

    1.31.2025

The Peechees / The Drags - Radio Disappears [Split 7", 1996]

I'm not even trying to be hyperbolic, I think Elon Musk needs to be arrested. No one voted him anything, he is not a government employee, yet he has his hands in everything, directly or by proxy, fucking around with government functions. Locking out federal civil servants from government personnel files? For what purpose?  Trying to control government payment systems? It's a coup! Truly, what the fuck is happening?

Anyways. I need a fucking break. So here's two great bands covering each other.
