quadiliacha - keeper of the seven bass players (1996 denied a custom)

More excellent thrash-hardcore-pop. Still trying to determine if "Hooked On Scott M.C." or "Frankly Scarlett" is my favorite Quadiliacha song. Still trying to figure out how they got one my drawerings from sixth grade to use for the cover...

Today, the thanks for saving me the effort of having to rip my copy goes to the fine folks at Beyond Failure.

the literal simile

Like David Cross, one of my biggest pet peeves is the misuse of the word literally. It seems like it's getting worse lately, but I have noticed a new variant: Using literally in a way that is technically correct, but sounds incorrect, and is wholly unnecessary. This happens when someone says something akin to literally like.  Example: "We were going so fast, it was literally like we were flying " Well, you didn't claim to actually be flying, so yeah, I guess it is feasible that it was literally like you were flying. But that is called a simile, which is kinda sorta the opposite concept of literally. They cancel each other out and make my brain hurt. People who preface figurative speech with a literal qualifier need a gonad punch. But not literally.

Also, if you think I'm being nit-picky, wait until Wifey takes the ol'  red marker to this post. I live in a grammatical gulag.

50 million - ur2punk4me (1998 probe)

It would be impossible to overstate the similarities between 50 Million and Hickey, and that's about the highest praise I can give. Brilliant band who have been overlooked for far too long.

mama chris's bbq, spring valley

Chris's? Is that correct? Oh well... Kinda sketchy looking BBQ joint in Spring Valley (like anything in Spring Valley isn't sketchy looking), but run by some really nice folks. They make you feel like you know them, and that you are a guest at their house, if that makes any sense. I ordered the rib tips, which I liked, but I wish I would have just ordered the actual ribs. A place can not be judged on rib tips alone. That being said, they were good. Only complaint - too much sauce. The fries were excellent, with some grilled onions mixed in. Order was delayed because the cook/owner had to peel the potatoes first - always good sign. Down with Sysco!

this war, that war, class war, last war

The Republican stand is: Either the rich get to keep their tax cut, no one does. And if you don't agree with this, you are waging class war. And it's understandable, because, really the while the income gap may be at the largest margin ever, the rich do not yet own everything. And that is a tragedy.
The top-earning 20 percent of Americans - those making more than $100,000 each year - received 49.4 percent of all income generated in the U.S., compared with the 3.4 percent earned by those below the poverty line, according to the newly released Census figures. That ratio of 14.5-to-1 was an increase from 13.6 in 2008 and nearly double a low of 7.69 in 1968.

A different measure, the international Gini index, found U.S. income inequality at its highest level since the Census Bureau began tracking household income in 1967. The U.S. also has the greatest disparity among Western industrialized nations.
At the top, the wealthiest 5 percent of Americans, who earn more than $180,000, added slightly to their annual incomes last year, government data show. Families at the $50,000 median level slipped lower.

queers - a proud tradition (1992 selfless)

This is a 1994 re-issue of the first two Queers EP's. Tracks 1-s are the 1982 Ep. Tracks 7-13 are the 1984 EP. Wimpy was the singer for all these songs, except, of course, "Love Me".

A big, big thank you to Hardcore Punk Reviews, who coincidentally posted an excellent rip of this a couple of weeks ago, making my job a lot, lot easier. Also thanks to Kevin the Australian, who gave me my first donation ever.

A British businessman who last year bought the company that makes the Segway scooter fell to his death off a cliff in northern England, apparently while riding one of the vehicles on his estate.

new york buffalo wings

New wings place on El Cajon Blvd. Similar to Wings 'N' Things, just with a few more flavor options for your wings. Oh, and you can get ribs.

In the past few weeks, I've tried both.

The boneless strips were really good. Moist, spicy, and a good portion size. No big drop-off from Wings 'N' Things. Unlike Wings 'N' Things, they give you a choice of fries or breadsticks with your combo.

Nice to have a wings option located a little closer to me.

The ribs were pretty meh. Not horrible, but I'll probably never order them again. I don't know why I keep ordering ribs all around town expecting someone, anyone, to be able to compete with Phil's. So far, no one has come close.

Stop in if you find yourself on the La Mesa portion of ECB. The chicken is good. Just don't spend too much time reading the signs. I counted about ten spelling and grammatical errors without even trying. And these were professionally made signs, not handwritten ones. This is what happens when you marry an English teacher.

quadiliacha / tres kids (no!

If I had to make a list of most overlooked bands of the 90's, Quadiliacha would be very, very high on it. Strange mix of pop-punk and thrash metal and I fucking love it. Buy everything you can from them, if you can find it. Also, I don't think their Nasty Savage worship was ironic.

Tres Kids I'm not as familiar with, but they sound like a mix of Fuckface and Assholeparade, which is a HUGE compliment.

This was limited to 900. I have #345. And record collectors are pretentious assholes.

  2. Q - Porky's

crocodile god - boss (1996 crackle)

Mix some Snuff, Cletus, Bracket, and about 12 other excellent pop-punk bands I can't quite place right now and you have something resembling the UK's Crocodile God. Catchy as all fuck. Produced by Frankie Stubbs.

  2. Wurlitzer
  3. Outta Water

hey diddle diddle

The way I see it, people who get all righteous about a particular "sin" are most likely privately indulging in that sin. I also believe there's a direct relationship between the level of righteousness and the level of sinful indulgence. See: Ted Haggart, Jimmy Swaggart, John Ensign, Larry Craig, et al, ad nauseum.

So, can you imagine how much jillin' goes on behind Christine O'Donnell's doors?

smashburger

I've been planning to go the La Jolla Smashburger for a while, but never got around to it, because I kinda hate going to La Jolla. But they just opened a Mission Valley location so lucky me.

Burger was good. Simple burger, and not too big, both attributes I like in a burger. I opted for my favorite toppings, blue cheese and bacon. Good burger. I forgot to ask for it medium rare, so I have no idea if they honor such requests. But the best part of the meal was the fried pickles. Oh lord they were good. Weirdly, they started tasting like hot dogs toward the end. No idea what that was all about, probably my taste buds were overloaded. Man, they were good.

Yet another Mutant Pop gem. Buglite were from Pennsylvania, and they play balls-out, pissed-off hardcore. Or crazy catchy pop punk. One of those two things are true.

all in the game, yo, all in tha game

Oh, the games Corporate America plays.

Oil and gas companies operating in the Gulf of Mexico will have to permanently plug nearly 3,500 temporarily abandoned wells and dismantle about 650 production platforms that are no longer used, the Obama administration announced Wednesday.

This would sound completely reasonable to me, even if the Deepwater Horizon incident never happened. I'm actually a bit shocked that wells were allowed to go uncapped and rigs abandoned.

"This is not the time to go back and impose additional costs on industry," [American Petroleum Institute President Jack] Gerard told reporters.

See,the game is: when there's a recession, well you can't impose any new regulations, because, well, we're in a recession! (And no, it doesn't matter if oil companies make record profits during said recession). But when there's not a recession, well, you can't have new regulations then, because you would threaten the economy.

So basically, no new regulations ever, and shame on you for even suggesting it, pinko.

everready - kalifornia (1995 mutant pop)

1995 Mutant Pop re-issue of the 1994 Liquid Meat 7". I have like, five people who pay attention to this blog on a regular basis, and one of them happens to be in the tiny minority of people who love Everready more than me, so I'm not gonna spend too many words on this. I'll just say that the end of Kalifornia is one of my favorite things ever and I hope the Awesome Fest/Fast (MAKE UP YOUR MINDS, ORGANIZERS!) reunion was not a one-time deal.

mama testa

I've been going to Mama Testa since 2004, so in a typical punk rock manner, I feel a little dismayed by its current popularity. "I was listening to Green Day eating at Mama Testa when they were on Lookout! a struggling restaurant." It's obnoxious, I know, but there it is. I think Mama Testa's current popularity derives in part because they were able to beat Bobby Flay in a fish taco Throwdown. Now, seeing as though can't help but order mojados every time I go, I didn't even realize they had fish tacos. So last time we went, I made sure to try them.

They are actually catfish tacos. They are served in a crispy shell, which is odd for a San Diego fish taco. It's topped by queso fresco and "Mexican cole slaw". Definitely a different twist on a fish taco. The big question is: Was it good? Yeah, it was good. But I don't see how Bobby Flay lost. This was really good, but not even close to the best fish taco in San Diego. That would be the Marlin Taco at Marisco's German.

Senate Republicans will oppose any effort to renew soon-to-expire Bush administration tax cuts if upper income taxpayers are excluded from the reductions.
A spokesman for Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell says the Kentucky Republican has pledges from every Senate Republican to filibuster President Barack Obama's plan to allow the top income tax rate to rise back to almost 40 percent on family or small business income over $250,000.

democratic martyrs

That fear-mongering, race-baiting, and paranoia seem to be greater on September 11, 2010 than on September 11, 2002 makes me very sad. Instead of giving in to our basest instincts, perhaps it's time to revisit the words of the late, great David Foster Wallace.

Are some things still worth dying for? Is the American idea* one such thing? Are you up for a thought experiment? What if we chose to regard the 2,973 innocents killed in the atrocities of 9/11 not as victims but as democratic martyrs, “sacrifices on the altar of freedom”?* In other words, what if we decided that a certain baseline vulnerability to terrorism is part of the price of the American idea? And, thus, that ours is a generation of Americans called to make great sacrifices in order to preserve our democratic way of life—sacrifices not just of our soldiers and money but of our personal safety and comfort?
In still other words, what if we chose to accept the fact that every few years, despite all reasonable precautions, some hundreds or thousands of us may die in the sort of ghastly terrorist attack that a democratic republic cannot 100-percent protect itself from without subverting the very principles that make it worth protecting?
Is this thought experiment monstrous? Would it be monstrous to refer to the 40,000-plus domestic highway deaths we accept each year because the mobility and autonomy of the car are evidently worth that high price? Is monstrousness why no serious public figure now will speak of the delusory trade-off of liberty for safety that Ben Franklin warned about more than 200 years ago? What exactly has changed between Franklin’s time and ours? Why now can we not have a serious national conversation about sacrifice, the inevitability of sacrifice—either of (a) some portion of safety or (b) some portion of the rights and protections that make the American idea so incalculably precious?
In the absence of such a conversation, can we trust our elected leaders to value and protect the American idea as they act to secure the homeland? What are the effects on the American idea of Guantánamo, Abu Ghraib, PATRIOT Acts I and II, warrantless surveillance, Executive Order 13233, corporate contractors performing military functions, the Military Commissions Act, NSPD 51, etc., etc.? Assume for a moment that some of these measures really have helped make our persons and property safer—are they worth it? Where and when was the public debate on whether they’re worth it? Was there no such debate because we’re not capable of having or demanding one? Why not? Have we actually become so selfish and scared that we don’t even want to consider whether some things trump safety? What kind of future does that augur?
FOOTNOTES:
1. Given the strict Gramm-Rudmanewque space limit here, let's just please all agree that we generally know what this term connotes—an open society, consent of the governed, enumerated powers, Federalist 10, pluralism, due process, transparency ... the whole democratic roil.

jughead's revenge / strung out (fearless)

Not much to say about this, except that I think "Season Of The Witch" is one of the stronger points in Strung Out's oeuvre. Oh, I went to the Fearless Records website to find out what year this was released and HOLY SHIT. Fearless was never the best label around, but they put out their fair share of good stuff back in the day. Looking at that what they are doing now, eeek. They've cornered the market on dumb haircuts and horrible music. Sad, sad, sad, all the way to the bank, I guess.
