i watched the Temple Grandin movie recently, and it was awesome. it did a great job of explaining for me her "i'll treat them with respect, even if--and especially because--i am gonna kill and eat them."
Josh, that's the approach I try to take. But I'm pretty much a hypocrite since I probably do eat meat from cows which have suffered profusely. But I think about it a lot. Hopefully, I'm arcing towards a day (and a paycheck) where I can practice what I kind of preach.

I am a fat vegetarian & it kind of sucks because I have to explain to people the reason I'm fat is because I choose to be a drunk straight edge guy.
