the skin surf

Because I'm old and lame, I've never heard of Tera Melos. Thanks, to Underwire, I have now.

Good shit. Sad part is they are from the Sacramento area, meaning I probably could have seen them a shitload of times from 2006-2008. But I didn't. Because I''m old. And lame.

Fucking love this guy.

this is berkeley not west bay [afi, screw 32, black fork, dead and gone] (1994 zafio)

Sure, you'll come for the AFI and Screw 32, but you'll stay for the Black Fork and Dead And Gone.

Seriously though, as tempting as it is to bag on AFI, they were really good once, and they have the second best song on this comp (Black Fork wins this one).

  1. Black Fork - People's Parking Lot
  2. Dead And Gone - Desperate
  3. A.F.I. - Love Is A Many Splendored Thing
  4. Screw 32 - Bandwagon

entombed / new bomb turks split (1995 earache)

One of the stranger pairings I've seen on a split. I prefer my Entombed a little more Left Hand Path-ish, but I can dig the Wolverine Blues era stuff as well. They released this 15 years too soon, though. Could have really cashed in on the whole Twilight / True Blood thing with this Roky Erikson cover.

New Bomb Turks rip, as usual. They do an Anti-Nowhere League song here.

  1. E: Night Of The Vampire
  2. NBT: I Hate People

high 'n' dry

FoodCourtLunch has the answer to the question "What is the greatest Def Leppard album of all time" wrong. Very wrong. So completely wrong that I'm inclined to think I'm dreaming right now. The answer is definitely not Hysteria, which is a shitty, shitty record devoid of the soul of the first two records. An overpolished turd.  But it's not Pyromania, either. Now, don't get me wrong, Pyromania is a damn fine rock 'n' roll record, no doubt. An album that pretty much defined 6th grade for me. Contains arguably the best Def Leppard song ever ("Foolin'"). And the beginning of "Rock Of Ages"? Eepen Gleepen Gloppen Globben? He's saying "We're coming to Fresno", backwards. I swear it's true. Someone in 6th grade said so. But High 'n' Dry (1984 re-issue with "Me And My Wine") is easily the best Def Leppard record.

counter clockwise dancefloor, counter culture hardcore

This In Defence ditty reminds me of the first time I witnessed 'hardcore dancing'. It was at the Che Cafe, and all the floorpunching and kung fu shit, gah. My first instinct was to laugh, but after a few minutes it dawned upon me that no, this was not a big joke. These kids doing windmills were wholly serious, and apparently spent time practicing their moves for for the big show. My laughter morphed into to confusion to sorrow to pity and finally to utter disdain.

helix

Sometimes I joke (though, it's absolutely true) that when I was in middle school, I was into "underground hair metal". What does that look like? In a nutshell, Helix.

This video brings back a lot of memories, mostly of how me and Mark like to replace the "Rock" with another four letter word. Cause we were intellectual, see. Strangely, one memory it does not bring back is of all the bazongas (hello! 49 second mark!) flapping about. We must have seen a PG version, because I'm pretty if I saw this version I would have never left the house. It would have been Wankapalooza '84. Not even Brian Vollmer's (the singer) creepiness could kill that boner.

The guy who introduced me to the magically cheesy world of Helix was this kid Ted, who had scared me into being his friend.

I didn't know Ted at all, but one day, for whatever reason, I decided to mock him. Bad idea. I wasn't a complete fatass at that point, so I was able to evade and outrun him when he went after me. I forgot about the incident. Ted did not. And the next morning I got socked in the jaw. In the aftermath it was determined that we both liked metal so we should be friends. I don't remember having a say in this matter. All I know is that Ted scared the shit out of me, and if he wanted to be friends, then fuck it, we were friends. Apparently, part of this "friendship" meant that I had to go pick him on my bike on the way to school. Except that once I got to his house, Ted got to ride the bike and hike me. So Madman Ted drove wildly through the streets and sidewalks of Lemoore, kicking over trashcans, while I white-knuckled it on the motherfucking handlebars. Once we would make it to PW Engvall middle school, after I kissed the ground like the pope, all I could do was dreadfully anticipate the nightmare bike journey home.

But Ted did have a pretty extensive tape collection. Helix and Armored Saint were the two bands I most remember him getting me hooked on. Two bands absolutely not worth risking life and limb for, but hey, lemons/lemonades, amirite?

sherrod

This whole Shirley Sherrod episode is grotesque on many levels. One of those levels is that somehow Barack Obama himself is to blame, and that Obama is the one with a race problem. The White House, by which I really mean Tom Vilsack, is certainly guilty of a stupid kneejerk reaction in trying to premptively avoid a right wing race related freakout. If Obama gave the green light to Vilsack, then he is guilty of the same. But c'mon, mang. Andrew Breitbart is the villain here. No sugarcoating it. Yet, it seems like he is being treated as a minor player, even just the faciliatator, rather than  the willful, slandering, liar he is.

That in 2010, right-wing Conservatives have the biggity balls to try and lead a discussion about how whites are the real target of racism would be laughable, except that they are doing just that. And the "media" is biting. hook, line and sinker. No idea what Breitbart would have to do to get off of their radar, except maybe become a liberal.

I could go on but I think I think I'd rather just do the lazy/blogger/pajamas/basement thing and quote some people more eloquent than I:

Josh Marshall:
Still, you just have to...realize that as disappointing as Tom Vilsack's first crack at this was, the idea that he or Obama is the bad guy in this story is not only preposterous but verging on obscene. It's like the NYPD as the bad guy in the Son of Sam saga because they didn't catch David Berkowitz fast enough.

Scott Rosenberg
If you're a writer or journalist and you quote someone selectively or out of context so egregiously that you can twist their words to mean the very opposite of what they actually convey when they're quoted in full or in context, what you have done is not just mischievous or aggressive, it's outright wrong. If you're a professional, then you've committed an act of professional malfeasance.
And if you get away with this sort of stunt repeatedly, despite being exposed and shamed for it, then you are pulling off a grand heist -- stealing the credibility of larger media and government institutions that continue to pay attention to you.

Why on earth would you send someone to training on a pretty powerful database program when that person is unfamiliar with the concept of rows, columns, right click, and left? And if you are that person, why are you always chatting and not paying attention? And, knowing all that, why would you possibly try to blame the computer when you're not getting the same results as everyone else? /rant

national guard - star spangled losers! (1996 smooth lips)

Bought this on the tail edge of my mid-90's record hoarding. National Guard were from Oregon, and played some straight up punk rock. I like this a lot, but I have to say, it takes (to use wifey's phrase) biggity balls to be a band from Portland not named Poison Idea and have a song called "Lifestyles".

Special thanks to x43x / xstuckinthepastx for the great rip. Dude does it right so I don't have to.

miho gastrotruck, pt 2

The MIHO Gastrotruck has been making weekly appearances near my work at lunchtime, which has me pretty excited. Today I went with the pulled pork sandwich (that's an apple and savoy cabbage slaw covering the pork, whatever the fuck savoy is), and a side of poutine (fries, mushroom gravy, cheese, parsley), which I've never had before. Actually, I'd (tragically) never even heard of poutine until this recent New Yorker article.

Anyhoo, in a restaurant setting, I'd be happy. Out of a truck? Thrilled.

(And yeah, that's my sexy-ass leg in the background. That's what happens when you eat out of your car like a vagabond)

sharon tate / stinkaholic split (1995 rekluse)

Couple of mid-90's Fresno area bands. If I remember correctly both bands had sizable populations who absolutely loathed them. I didn't mind either band. Sharon Tate was doing something a little different, and I think a lot of people just didn't get it. As you can probably tell from their sound, Stinkaholic's fan base consisted of an army of thirteen-year-old mall-punks, which made them easy to hate. I didn't. I thought they were all pretty nice guys. They moved to San Diego around the same time I did (the first time), but I completely lost track of them.

bob's big boy

There's a Bob's Big Boy in El Cajon. Haven't been to one in years. Nostalgia got to me, so me and the missus had to check it out. I was full on intending to just go with the classic Big Boy for old time's sakes. But then I saw that Bob's had a blue cheese burger, which is my kryptonite. What to do, what to do? Well I made a deal with the missus: We'd order one of each and then split them. Am I a genius or what?

The Big Boy was as good as I remembered. The blue cheese burger, which also had cheddar and mozzerella, was even better. Nothing gourmet or anything, just a really guilty pleasure. But they took their toll. We hadn't even paid the bill before food coma/regret started to set in. Did not sit well, but was kinda worth it.

Apologies to the vege-punks.

Drudge Headline:

MICHELLE TELLS BLACKS TO 'INCREASE INTENSITY'

Which links to an ABC story headlined:

Michelle Obama Rouses NAACP Before Vote Condemning 'Racist' Elements of Tea Party

But then you read the story, and it's not about Michelle Obama at all. Really, all it says about Michelle Obama speech is:

The first lady's speech focused on childhood obesity and her "Let's Move" initiative designed to promote healthy living and eating for children.
Wait...what? Healthy eating? So the first lady isn't advocating a race riot? I'm so disappointed. It's almost as if Drudge and ABC News wanted to purposely mislead me into thinking there was something nefarious about Michelle's speech! Cuz that would never happen.

latin chef

Peruvian ceviche (Cebiche De Pescado) from Latin Chef in Pacific Beach. You gots your corn on the bottom, yams to the right, and white sea bass marinated in lemon juice, topped with onions, to the upper left. A bit different than the ceviche I'm used to. Wasn't crazy about the corn, which was rather flavorless, but the rest of the meal was quite good.
