I don't really care for ska-punk, but I don't mind straight up ska. I'm not in Propagandhi. Hepcat, though on punk label BYO, play it straight. Good stuff.

cornholio mccain

The other day, Krugman called Republicans the party of Beavis and Butthead for their tendency to mock things without really thinking them through. As you would expect, Krugman has absolutely no influence on the GOP, as just today, John McCain mocks "Beaver Management" via Twitter (a sure sign of shark jumping if there ever was one). Now, there are a million jokes to be made about "Beaver Management", especially when you are discussing "Beaver Management" in regards to "pork", but McCain missed all of them. Instead, he mocks the idea of it, without taking a few minutes to first find out what the fuck it means.

Per Brendan Nyhan's suggestion, we should all email McCain this link (and Bobby Jindal this one. And this one).

Some my fellow brilliant San Diegans have joined the Republican craze sweeping the nation....Teabagging! What's that? Oh, sorry, I meant Tea Parties! Inspired by a blabbering moron, they are showing their displeasure with any and all taxes by emulating the Boston Tea Party - taking Government property and dumping it into the ocean, sewing the seeds of Revolution!!
Protesters tossed large clear plastic bags -- stuffed with shredded paper -- into the harbor. The bags has (sic) strings attached that were used to retrieve them later.
Oh. Or that. Bags of shredded paper? Strings to retrieve them later? Hellraisers!

I am in a Renauldian state of disbelief:
Those states that do consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption, the study finds.

haven't you seen dante's peak????

Krugman continues the Jindal trainwreck postmortem.
Knowing when a volcano is likely to erupt can save many lives; but there’s no private incentive to spend money on monitoring, since even people who didn’t contribute to maintaining the monitoring system can still benefit from the warning. So that’s the sort of activity that should be undertaken by government.

So what did Bobby Jindal choose to ridicule in this response to Obama last night? Volcano monitoring, of course....
The intellectual incoherence is stunning. Basically, the political philosophy of the GOP right now seems to consist of snickering at stuff that they think sounds funny. The party of ideas has become the party of Beavis and Butthead.

embargo

Only 20 years (minimum) too late!
Senator Lugar, the senior Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and a hugely influential figure in US politics, says Washington's policies towards Havana have been ineffective.

"After 47 years... the unilateral embargo on Cuba has failed to achieve its stated purpose of 'bringing democracy to the Cuban people'," he says.

"It may have been used as a foil by the regime to demand further sacrifices from Cuba's impoverished people."

1. I look for a clip of HBO's "Eastbound & Down".

2. I ask SC if she's ever heard the song "Eastbound and Down" from Smokey & The Bandit.

3. SC says it sounds vaguely familiar. "Who's the singer?"

4. Me: "Jerry Reed".

5. SC: "Oh yeah."

6. Me: "You know who Jerry Reed is?"

7. "Yeah, he was on an episode of Scooby Doo."

8. Me: Googling jerry + reed + scooby + doo

jindal II

NEW YORK – Insane. Childish. Disaster. And those were some of the kinder comments from political pundits about Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and his response to President Barack Obama's speech to Congress on Tuesday night.
....in both style and substance, Jindal's speech has drawn flak from Republicans and Democrats alike.
>

jindal

Why comment, when we have the Institute...
Similar to the belief that Sarah Palin would attract women voters because of the uteri in common, the GOP figured it could chisel in on Obama’s popularity by offering up their own melanin-enabled spokesperson. As if it’s all a gimmick.

But what they don’t seem to grasp is that Hillary was popular with women voters because she was smart as a whip, offered a spate of desperately needed progressive policies like health care reform, and, importantly, she was not Bush or Bush’s champion. Palin? Not so much....

Promoting Jindal under the pretense that “any ol’ ethnic’ll do” is equal parts patronizing, condescending and daft because, while Jindal is indisputably brown, he still sounded like Urkel - only without Urkel’s je ne sais quoi - reciting a laundry list of Bush/Cheney’s greatest hits.

It’s like the GOP is incorporating the worst aspects of the caricature of affirmative action that they’ve used to drum up resentment over the past few decades: promoting incompetent, untalented individuals based almost entirely on the color of their skin or their gender.

So when we had the chance to speak with executive producer Ron Howard on the red carpet at the Oscars, we asked him to kick us some truth. He did, and now MTV News can exclusively confirm that the “Arrested Development” is happening. “It’s going ahead,” Howard confirmed.

This actually happened. It's been changed now, but it's not fake. Via everybody.

let the record show

While Republican governors are hyperventilating over the size of the stimulus bill, agonizing over the philosophical dilemma of accepting federal money, keep in mind that they are all taking it. It all just a PR campaign done for the benefit of National Review. Bobby Jindal, the "heroic" governor taking a "principled" stand, getting lauded and feted by the right wing for turning down federal money, is only turning down 2% of stimulus money. ¡Que Macho!

Now to be fair (and God help me, I hate being fair), Governors do not generally have the authority to single-handedly turn all the money down. But they should turn down each and every dollar they are able to. Bootstraps, son! For the rest of it not in their control they should put their non-Federal money where their mouths are fight. Mattresses - go to them. Scapegoat your legislatures. Mock Obama. Don't be a hypocrite. Make your stand! Make this your Alamo...er...I mean Waterloo!

octo-mom

My co-workers love to get fired up about "Octo-mom". They go on and on about it, like somehow they have been personally wronged by her. She's on welfare. She claims disability. She already has a bunch of kids. They attack her doctor for doing it. They get really, really worked up.

I don't disagree at all with any of their complaints. Although it's not a personal affront to me, I actually agree with them - she's not a very sympathetic person.  It just bothers me that day after day of various outrages go by uncommented upon. Horrible shit happens in this country and around the world every day. The Bush Administration gave us a myriad of shit to be outraged about on a daily basis. War. Torture. 4000+ dead in Iraq. All met with silence. But Octo-Mom? Let the shitstorm begin. And these shitstorms usually end with death threats. At the minimum.

I'm not shocked or outraged about it. On some level, I understand it. But it does bother me. It's a curious case, I admit. But calm the hell down, folks.

the other side of the story

Because you will for sure hear about each and every homemade rocket, but never about any possible motives...

Israel opened the way for possible expansion of the Efrat settlement by taking control of a nearby West Bank hill of 423 acres. The rocky plot was recently designated state land and is part of a master plan that envisions the settlement growing from 9,000 to 30,000 residents, Efrat Mayor Oded Revivi said.

my day, ruined

2009 is shaping up to be the worst year ever for music. First Blink-182, now Limp Bizkit.

...Fred Durst has kept fairly busy with gigs acting (House M.D., the 2005 miniseries Revelations) and directing (last year's family film The Longshots). But today we learned that he is reuniting with the entire original LB lineup of Sam Rivers, John Otto, DJ Lethal, and Wes Borland...
What's next, a Crazy Town reunion? MAKE IT STOP.

my day, made

Christmas '09 is already looking good...

IDW Publishing is pleased to announce the forthcoming release of The Bloom County Library. Beginning in October 2009, each of the five volumes will collect nearly two years worth of daily and Sunday strips, in chronological order. This will be the very first time that many of these comic strips have been collected, and the first time in a beautifully designed, hardcover format. The books will be part of IDW’s Library of American Comics imprint, and designed by Eisner Award-winner Dean Mullaney.

Mid 90's SoCal pop punk with the slightest of ska influences. Released on Cheap Guy records, which I think was run by the singer of the Voodoo Glow Skulls. I haven't listened to this in at least ten years, and I was struck by how easily this would fit on the Plan-It-X roster. I hear a lot of Operation: Cliff Clavin, 'specially in the vocals.

Oh, and my record is scratched near the end of Naked Thugs. I tried to work some Audacity magic, but you can totally tell where the edit is. If it bothers you, ask for your money back.

mama testa

I first stumbled into Mama Testa back in 2004 thinking, based on the name, that it was an Italian joint. Quickly found out it wasn't. It's a Mexican restaurant, and soon the owner was explaining to me the origin of the name (and concept). Something to do with the Spanish Conquest and a covert language used by Indians - I don't remember the details. So while Mama Testa is a Mexican restaurant, it is not what you're thinking. Yes, there are tacos, salsas, rice and beans, and many of the other trappings you're familiar with. But Mama Testa focuses on regional specialties from all parts of Mexico.

I've liked everything I've had. The Yucatecos (marinated pork tacos) are especially good. But hands down my favorite thing at MT are the Mojados. Easiest way to describe it is "rolled tacos cut up and served in a bowl of tortilla soup". Doesn't sound all that exciting, but they are so good, I almost look forward to cold weather. Oh, I eat them during the summer, but they are perfect for a chilly night.

Another thing I love about Mama Testa is the salsa bar. There are at least ten different types, from mango to a salsa with sesame seeds (my personal fave). Oh, the parmesan/tomatillo salsa is definitely worth mentioning as well.

I meant to write about Mama Testa when I first moved back to San Diego a year ago. I was a little scared they might not be around, as University Ave sees a lot of turnover restaurant-wise. But lucky for me (and you) it seems to have found a little niche, and is highly recommended. Definitely in my top ten San Diego places to eat.

only in kings county

I'm sure his job is completely safe now.

Edwin Jovani Farias, 23, of Hanford was arrested at 3:30 a.m. following a 10 minute-long pursuit through rural Kings County. Farias allegedly told deputies during his arrest that he "knew he would be arrested," but wanted to make it to work first so his co-workers would see him and he would "not be fired when he didn't show up."

bankers

Slate has to be the most ridiculous site on the internet. The sad part is, there's the occasional good article or series (Blogging The Bible, movie reviews, etc) that make it a site worth tracking. But 90% of it is predictable, up-is-down, black-is-white, hey-look-at-me contrarianism. Like this. Yes, pity the poor, poor, noble bankers.

Which makes me wonder. When someone decides to go into the banking profession, what is their motive? Is it altruistic? Is it to gain a greater understanding of the world? Is it to help others? I doubt it.

To some extent, I agree with Slate: Greedy motherfuckers are necessary in the system we've got, and not all of the greedy motherfuckers on Wall Street are directly responsible for the current mess. But that doesn't mean they are not greedy motherfuckers. So stop asking me to feel sorry for them.

fucked up

In no way am I trying to disparage Fucked Up. I like Fucked Up. A lot. I want to make that perfectly clear.

But I don't understand why they are the hardcore band that made it big with the Pitchfork crowd. While they are great, there are better bands out there. Is it the arty album covers? Is it that their songs usually clock in at over five minutes rather than under two? I don't get it. Career Suicide, who share a member with Fucked Up, is a much better band.

But tonight I got it. I saw Fucked Up play at the Casbah, and all the stuff I thought was pretty good in my car was GREAT live. Fucked Up is meant to be heard live. The records, which are pretty great to begin with, don't do them a bit of justice.

my plan to balance the budget

Nominate everyone in America who makes over $1 million a year to a cabinet position, then use all the income taxes they suddenly "overlooked" to balance the budget.

Easy peasy lemon squeezy.
